GW Men's Tennis Continues Play at ITA Regionals

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Three Colonials advanced at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships on Saturday as GW completed the third day of competition at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Senior Danil Zelenkov, junior Julius Tverijonas and sophomore Christos Hadjigeorgiou each won their singles bouts in the Round of 64 to advance in the main draw.
Tverijonas, who is seeded in the tournament, took on Temple's Artem Kapshuk and triumphed, 6-3, 6-4, and Hadjigeorgou upset VCU's seeded Louis Ishiza, 6-3, 6-2. Zelenkov, seeded 15th, grabbed GW's final solo victory of the day with a, 6-4, 7-6 (4), win over Virginia's Jonathan Cornish.
Tverijonas will face 13th-seeded Luca Corinteli of Virginia in the Round of 32, while Hadjigeorgiou will take on sixth-seeded Edoardo Tessaro of Virginia Tech - who carries a No. 109 ITA singles ranking. Zelenkov will play Radford's Janken Thoen on Sunday.
In the singles consolation draw, sophomore Chris Reynolds wrapped his weekend with a, 6-2, 7-6 (4), victory over Penn State's Nika Dolidze, while junior Fernando Sala battled for a 3-6, 7-6 (6), 10-4, defeat of Old Dominion's Zvonimir Podvinski.
In doubles play, the fourth-seeded duo of Zelenkov and Tverijonas tallied a pair of victories, first over Temple's Hicham Belkssir and Uladzimir Dorash, 8-6, before downing Old Dominion's Jacob Nicolussi and Michael Weindl, 8-5. GW will face UMBC's Jaan Kononov and Melker Svard in the quarterfinal round.
Play resumes on Sunday with one round of doubles play and two rounds of main draw singles play.
