GW Men's Tennis' Sala Advances at ITA Regionals

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Junior Fernando Sala defeated two opponents in singles action on the first day of the ITA Atlantic Region Championships on Thursday to advance to main draw competition at the Virginia Tech-hosted tournament.
Sala downed Mount St. Mary's Austin Blake in the three-set, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, battle before triumphing over Hicham Belksir of Temple, 6-4, 6-4, to earn a spot in the main draw. Sala will take on Richmond's Canyon Teague on Friday morning in the Round of 128.
Sophomore Jabari Stafford fought hard, but ultimately fell, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, in his qualifying round opening match to James Madison's Miljan Ruzic.
Main draw singles and doubles action will begin on Friday. The Colonials will compete in four pairs in the doubles Round of 128: sophomores Christos Hadjigeorgiou and Chris Fletcher; junior Julius Tverijonas and senior Danil Zelenkov; senior Cahit Kapukiran and Chris Reynolds; and Sala and Stafford.
