CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The 54th-ranked George Washington men's tennis team dropped a close match to Atlantic 10 foe No. 51 VCU, 4-3, on Saturday in the final day of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
The Colonials (0-2) started the afternoon strong, winning the doubles point, but lost four singles matches to tilt the score in favor of Atlantic 10 rival VCU (5-1).
After being defeated in the top doubles slot, GW's No. 2 tandem of freshman Chris Fletcher and junior Danil Zelenkov and No. 3 duo of junior Cahit Kapukiran and freshman Christos Hadjigeorgiou pulled out victories at 6-3 and 7-5, respectively, to earn the Colonials the early doubles point.
In singles action, Zelenkov posted a 6-2, 6-4 win in second flight competition to give GW a 2-0 lead over the Rams. Straight set losses to the Rams at the No. 4 and No. 1 slots knotted the score at two. Kapukiran battled for a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory at the No. 5 spot to give the Buff and Blue the edge before Tverijonas went the distance with VCU's Catalin Fifea in the three slot in a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 loss to even the match at three. Hadjigeorgiou battled hard but ultimately fell to Jacob Svensson, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 to allow the Rams to clinch the victory.
