TULSA, Okla. - Senior Francisco Dias fell in a three-set battle in the final round of qualifying singles play at the 2014 Saint Francis Health Systems ITA Men's Tennis All-American Championships on Wednesday at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Dias worked his way through the draw with consecutive victories over the bracket's No. 1 seed and 46th-ranked Jeremy Efferding of Texas A&M and Thomas Weigel of North Carolina State, but was ultimately edged by UNLV's Denys Pume.
After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (5), the Lisbon, Portugal product powered back to take the second set, 6-1, and even the match. The decisive third set was also a tiebreaker, with Dias narrowly falling, 6-7 (3).
Following Wednesday's competition, Dias was selected to the Lucky Loser list. Lucky Losers are determined in order of the highest seeds that lose in the final qualifying round. Once the seeds are exhausted, the remaining Lucky Losers are determined by random draw. As the second alternate, Dias would get a chance to play in the main draw if two players drop out from the event. The Colonials return to the court this weekend at the three-day UVA Fall Classic in Charlottesville, Virginia.
