WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has nominated George Washington men's tennis alumni and GW Athletic Hall of Fame member Dave Haggerty ('79) to serve as president for the 2013-14 term.
"It is very exciting to have a GW men's tennis alum and hall of fame inductee as the next president of the USTA," seventh-year head coach Greg Munoz said. "This is a great time to be part of GW as the athletics department has a new initiative under the guidance of Patrick Nero to compete amongst the best in the country. Having a tennis alum at the helm of American tennis makes us proud to be part of GW and we wish Dave great success."
Haggerty previously served as director at large, vice president and first vice president for the USTA, the national governing body for the sport of tennis. He also served as the Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee and as a member of the Compensation and Executive committees.
Haggerty won four letters at GW from 1975-79, competing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for three of those seasons and winning the team MVP award in each of those three years. During his collegiate career he posted a singles record of 84-26 and an impressive 98-12 doubles record.
Professionally, Haggerty has influenced the tennis industry greatly, working for Prince, Dunlop/Slazenger and Head for more than 25 years. As well, Racquet Sports Industry named him 2008 Person of the Year.
In addition to being inducted into the George Washington Athletic Hall of Fame, Haggerty was also inducted into the Pennsbury High School Athletic, USTA Middle States and Mercer County Tennis Halls of Fame.
Haggerty lives in Pennington, N.J., with his wife, Patti, and their five children.
