CARY, N.C. - The George Washington baseball team was swept by Army in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Team USA National Training Facility. The Colonials suffered an 11-6 setback in game one followed by a 5-0 loss in game two.
The first game featured a back-and-forth battle between GW (0-5) and Army (3-2) that was decided in the later innings.
Army took a 2-0 in the top of the first inning off of GW starter Brian Derner but the Colonials responded to tie the game in the bottom half. Senior Tyler McCarthy led off with a single and later advanced to third after classmate Ollie Mittag reached base on an error. Senior Stephen Oswald then delivered a RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1. Senior Brett Bowers added a bases-loaded walk later in the inning to tie the score.
The Black Knights regained the lead in the top of the third with a RBI single by Michael Sands. Following the scoring single, Derner found himself in a jam with runners on the corners and two outs but senior third basemen Brett Bowers delivered a dazzling jumping snag of a line drive to escape the threat.
The Colonials once again responded in the bottom half of the frame. Sophomore Owen Beightol doubled down the left field line with one out and advanced to third on a ground out. Senior Jimmy Best then looped the first pitch he saw into shallow right field for a RBI single to tie the game, 3-3.
Army added a single run in the top of the fourth and two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead but the Colonials rallied once again to pull even in the bottom of the seventh.
A leadoff single from senior Ollie Mittag and a walk by senior Matt Murakami put two runners on base with one out. Sophomore Owen Beightol advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and junior Derek Brown, pinch hitting for Bowers, delivered a clutch two-run single to knot the score at 6-6.
That is close as the Colonials would come as the Black Knights rallied with two runs in the eighth and three runs in the ninth to clinch the 11-6 victory.
Army's hot hitting carried over to the second game as they scored three runs (one earned) in the top of the first off of GW starter Aaron Weisberg. Weisberg settled down to pitch five innings, yielding four runs (two earned), with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Colonials had an opportunity to cut the deficit in the bottom of the second but were unable to take advantage of a bases-loaded opportunity with one out.
Army added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to clinch the 5-0 victory and doubleheader sweep.
The Colonials and Black Knights will play the series finale on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. at the Team USA Baseball National Training Facility. Senior right-hander Tyler McCarthy is scheduled to get the start for GW.
