GW Men's Tennis Wraps Up Opening Weekend

WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's tennis team wrapped up opening weekend action on Sunday at the the UVa. Ranked Plus One Tournament, United States Tennis Association National Tennis Center Men's College Invitational and Georgetown Classic
On day three of action at the UVa. Ranked Plus One, freshman Francisco Dias and senior Ugur Atalay were edged by doubles pair Bruno Abdelnour and Stephen Hoh from Illinois, 8-5.
Dias then fell to Abdelnour later that afternoon in singles competition by scores of 6-4, 6-4. Dias finished in an impressive fourth place for the tournament, which was full of top-ranked NCAA Division I players. Atalay won his match, 7-5, 6-2, over Radford's Patrick O'Keefe.
"It was a solid showing for Francisco and Ugur, playing in their first tournament of the year," said Head Coach Greg Munoz. "We played some great competition and it was a great weekend to help prepare for the All-American Tournament, in Tulsa, Okla.
After winning his first three matches at the USTA NTC Men's College Invitational in Flushing, N.Y., senior Richard Blumenfeld dropped his finals match to Zachary Dean from Yale, 6-4, 6-4.
"Richard has been playing some great tennis," Munoz said. "As a co-captain he has been working very hard and you could see it in his performance this weekend."
The USTA NTC consolation doubles tournament for junior Alexander van Gils and sophomore Viktor Svensson was canceled due to rain.
On the second day of the Georgetown Classic in Washington, D.C., freshman Michael Kachkar lost in the first round of singles play to Cristian Hodel from UMBC, 10-7. Classmate Aaron Poliak won his first two matches before falling to eventual tournament champion, David Nguyen of Maryland.
Poliak defeated UDC's Carlos Quiroga, 10-3, and Timur Chernyk from Lehigh, 10-5. He ultimately dropped the quarterfinal match to Nguyen by a 10-3 score. The duo of Kachkar and Poliak faced off against Alex Tropiano and Andrew Bruhn from Georgetown in doubles action, but retired in the second match due to an injury from Poliak.
The Colonials return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
