ST LOUIS, MO- Junior Jimmy Best and freshman Owen Beightol combined for five RBIs and senior Tommy Gately earned his team-leading fifth win of the year to lead the George Washington baseball team to their second consecutive win, 9-4 over Saint Louis on Saturday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Center.
GW (14-32, 6-11 A-10) will go for the series sweep on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM eastern. LHP Bobby Lucas will start against the Billikens' LHP Damian Riveria.
Saint Louis (25-21, 6-11 A-10) took an early 2-0 lead off of Gately in the third inning but the Colonial offense responded immediately in the top of the fourth.
Sophomore Tyler McCarthy led off with a walk. A fielders choice and consecutive singles by Brett Bowers and Justin Albright loaded the bases. Beightol took advantage of the runners in scoring position and doubled to the alley in left-center field to clear the bases and give GW a 3-2 lead.
The Colonials took advantage of a Billiken error in the seventh inning, which opened the door to another three-run frame to extend the lead to 6-3.
Gately left the game to start the seventh inning. The senior from Reston, VA earned his team-leading fifth win of the season after pitching six innings, allowing just three earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
Sophomore Kenny O'Brien allowed just one earned run over the final three innings to secure GW's second straight victory.
Sophomore Kyle Gelling led off the ninth with his third hit of the day, a double to left field to start a sequence that resulted in three insurance runs for the Colonials. Junior Stephen Oswald led the charge with a two-run double.
GW enters Sunday's series finale batting.352 in the series.
