ARLINGTON, VA- Redshirt senior Bobby Lucas fanned 11 batters in six innings of work and senior Joe Richardson earned his fourth save of the season to lead the George Washington baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Temple in the regular season finale at Barcroft Park on Saturday afternoon.
GW (19-36, 9-15 A-10) gave Lucas a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning after loading the bases with no outs. Sophomore Kyle Gelling started things off with a walk. Senior Joe Motto followed with a line-drive single up the middle and freshman Owen Beightol hit an infield single on a bunt attempt.
Sophomore Paul Pakan then reached on fielder's choice as Gelling was forced out at home. Senior Brendon Kelliher drew a walk to load the bases again and then junior Stephen Oswald poked a two-run single through the right side of the infield to give the Colonials a 2-0 lead.
Lucas, in his final collegiate start, was sharp on the mound for the Colonials. He allowed just two runs on five hits with 11 strikeouts to earn the win. It was the third time this season that Lucas has posted double-digit strikeouts.
Temple (24-29, 4-20 A-10) scored single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings but the Colonials plated the winning run in the bottom half of the sixth. Oswald led off with a walk and advanced to second on a Tyler McCarthy single to left field. Junior Jimmy Best then reached on a fielder's choice, during which Oswald was forced out at third base. McCarthy used heads up base running to advance to third after the Owls attempted to throw out Best at first. Junior Brett Bowers then delivered a sacrifice fly to score Oswald, and put GW ahead for good, 3-2.
Freshman Aaron Weisberg relived Lucas in the seventh and pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts.
Richardson entered in the ninth and nailed down his fourth save of the season and second in as many days.
