Baseball Falls To Xavier In Game Two, 9-5

CINCINNATI, OH- Freshman Brookes Townsend recorded a career-high three RBIs on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough as the George Washington baseball team fell, 9-5, to Xavier in the second game of a three-game series at Hayden Field in Cincinnati.
GW (16-35, 6-14 A-10) got on the board first in the top of the first inning after sophomore Kyle Gelling walked, stole second and advanced to third on an error. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Stephen Oswald.
Xavier (27-23, 12-8 A-10) wasted no time erasing the deficit, as they took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first. Colonials starter Tommy Gately found himself in early trouble, surrendering a RBI double and two-run home run to the Musketeers before escaping the inning trailing 3-1. Gately took the loss after allowing five earned runs in four innings with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Colonials got a run in the top of the second to cut the deficit to 3-2 with a sacrifice bunt RBI by Townsend.
Xavier brought three runs across in both the third and sixth innings to open a 9-3 lead. Townsend delivered a two-run single in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 9-5, but that was as close as GW would come.
Freshmen Aaron Weisberg, Colin Milon and senior Joe Richardson combined to pitch shut-out baseball over the final two and two-thirds innings.
GW and Xavier conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at Hayden Field. LHP Bobby Lucas will get the start against RHP Vinny Nittoli. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
