ARLINGTON, VA- The George Washington baseball team dropped the opening game of their three-game series with Canisius on Saturday afternoon at Barcroft Park, 9-1. Saturday's scheduled doubleheader will be played on Sunday beginning at 11:00 am.
Redshirt senior Bobby Lucas recorded double-digit strikeouts for his second outing in a row with 11. He took the loss after allowing one earned run in six innings of work on six hits. In his last two starts, Lucas has totaled 21 strikeouts.
GW (9-22) was led by Lucas' effort on the mound in the opening inning as he retired five of the first eight batters he faced via strikeout, including striking out the side in both the second and third innings.
Canisius (13-16) used a crucial error that opened the door to a six-run fifth inning to blow the game open. After Lucas retired the first batter on a pop up, the Griffins' Ryan Barone reached safely on an error by Lucas when he was covering first base following a ground ball.
A single by Ryan Coppinger moved Barone to third base. After Lucas struck out Jose Tarrolba he issued a walk to Shane Zimmer to load the bases. Sean Jamieson followed with a three-run double to give Canisius a 3-0 lead. The Griffs would add a two-run home run and RBI single to extend the lead to 6-0.
The Colonials got on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning on freshman Owen Beightol's RBI single. However, this was all the Colonials were able to muster off of Canisius starter Billy Martin, who pitched a complete game for the victory. He allowed just one run on five hits while striking out four.
The Griffs added a run in the eighth and two in the ninth to push the lead to 9-1.
The Colonials and Griffins will conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday at Barcroft Park. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 11:00 am.
