GW Baseball Drops Slugfest To George Mason, 15-8

FAIRFAX, VA- Senior Brendon Kelliher was 5-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs but the George Washington baseball team could not overcome a six-run sixth inning by George Mason, falling to the Patriots 15-8 on Monday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
GW (9-20) got off to a quick start as they loaded the bases with no outs following consecutive singles from Kelliher and junior Ollie Mittag. Freshman Owen Beightol followed with a walk and junior Stephen Oswald delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead. The Colonials added a second run after junior Jimmy Best drew a bases loaded walk.
George Mason (12-17-1) tied the game in the bottom half of the first with two runs off of GW starter Craig Lejeune. LeJeune went four innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four.
Kelliher hit the first of his two home runs in the top of the third to put GW back on top 3-2, but the Patriots answered with two more runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead back 4-3.
After a scoreless third inning the Colonials jumped back in front in the top of the fourth. Freshman Jordan Berry singled up the middle and Kelliher followed with his second long ball of the day, and fifth of the season, as he launched a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to give GW a 5-4 lead.
Mason answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 5-5 but the Colonials responded immediately in the top of the fifth. Oswald led off with a solo home run over the right center field fence and Best produced a RBI groundout to give GW a 7-5 lead.
The Patriots once again tied the game in the bottom half of the fifth inning but Oswald delivered a RBI single in the top of the sixth to retake the lead for the Colonials, 8-7.
Mason exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and never looked back. They added a run in the seventh and eighth innings and used three scoreless frames from their bullpen to pull away for the 15-8 win.
The Colonials will have a chance to avenge today's loss, and will look to pick up their first win against George Mason since 2007 when the two teams conclude their home and home series on Tuesday afternoon at Barcroft Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm. RHP Ryan Heinz will face off against RHP Michael Bowie.
