Six Colonials Named to Atlantic 10 All-Conference Teams

WASHINGTON, DC -- Six members of the George Washington men's tennis team were named to the Atlantic 10 first, second and Academic All-Conference teams, the league announced on Friday. Head coach Greg Munoz was named the 2011 A-10 Men's Tennis Coach of the Year, for guiding the squad to its first A-10 title since 1979.
Seniors Christopher Kushma, Erik Hannah and Yan Levinski, along with junior Ugur Atalay, were named to the A-10 All-Conference first team. Sophomore Alexander van Gils and freshman Viktor Svensson represented GW on the All-Conference second team. Levinski became a four-year member of the A-10 Academic All-Conference team in a separate vote by conference sports information directors.
"I am so proud of this year's GW men's tennis team," said Munoz. "I am proud to have had six of my players nominated for all-conference and I want to thank all of the coaches for their sincere efforts in the voting. I would like to add a thank-you to my three athletes not recognized, Richard Blumenfeld, Andy Erickson and Ulrik Thomsen."
Hannah finished his career with a 30-0 record against A-10 opponents after defeating his counterpart from Xavier, 6-0, 6-0 in the A-10 Championship match. Kushma won the deciding point at No. 3 singles after going 3-0 at the A-10s at No. 2 doubles with van Gils.
Levinski started the fall season with a nine-match winning streak and won the Georgetown Classic. Van Gils and Svensson stepped up in their first season as Colonials, making a big impact in both doubles and singles matches.
The squad defeated three-time defending A-10 Champion Xavier, 4-0, in the finals to take home the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship title, wrapping up a perfect 8-0 record against league opponents. The Colonials earned their first-ever big to the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships by virtue of winning the A-10 crown. The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament take place May 13-15 on 16 campus sites around the country.
