
GW Baseball Falls In Series Opener To Dayton, 12-2

ARLINGTON, VA- Senior Brendon Kelliher extended his hit streak to 10 consecutive games and junior Stephen Oswald had two RBIs, but the Colonials could not hold off Dayton on Friday afternoon, falling in the series opener 12-2 at Barcroft Park.
GW (11-31, 3-10 A-10) yielded five home runs to visiting Dayton (24-18, 9-4 A-10) including a grand slam as part of an eight-run seventh inning.
The Flyers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Mike Coughlin connected on a two-run home run off of GW starter Brian Derner. Derner pitched six and one-third innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts. He left the game in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and was charged the runs when Brian Blasik hit a grand slam.
The Colonials were able to get the first two base runners of the sixth inning on base and Oswald followed with a two-run double down the left field line that tied the game 2-2.
Dayton blew the game open in the seventh inning by scoring eight runs on six hits, including three home runs. They added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to clinch the 12-2 victory.
This is the second time this season that Kelliher has registered a double-digit hit streak after hitting safely in 11 consecutive games from February 19-March 9. For his current streak, the senior from Sandwich, MA is hitting .405 with four home runs, 10 RBI, three doubles, eight runs and one steal. Kelliher was named the baseball team's Most Valuable Player on Thursday afternoon at the annual Senior Honors Luncheon on the GW campus and currently ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in home runs.
The Colonials and Flyers will play game two of their weekend series on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm. RHP Tommy Gately will get the start for the Colonials against Dayton's LHP Cameron Hobson.
