Baseball Falls To UMBC, 6-3

BALTIMORE, MD- The George Washington baseball team held a 3-1 lead after three innings but were unable to hold off home standing UMBC as the Retrievers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Colonials 6-3 on Wednesday evening at Baseball Factory Field.
GW (10-27) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after senior Brendon Kelliher sent a 1-1 pitch over the left-center field wall for his team-leading seventh home run of the season.
The Colonials added two runs in the third inning after sophomore Justin Albright doubled with one out. Junior Brett Bowers followed with a two-run home run over the left field fence to extend the lead to 3-0.
Freshman Colin Milon pitched well for the Colonials in his first career start. He threw three innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Sophomore Ryan Heinz took the ball to start the fourth inning for the Colonials and promptly escaped a jam. Following a hit batter and an error that left runners on first and second, Heinz struck out Casey Medairy on a 1-2 pitch to end the threat.
UMBC (5-23) scored in the sixth after Craig Himmelstein led off by reaching on an error. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on an error. Curtis Schickner followed with a RBI groundout. UMBC added four runs in the bottom of the eight with four RBI singles to take 6-3 lead.
The Colonials return to Atlantic 10 Conference play with a crucial three-game series at La Salle (20-15, 7-5 A-10) this weekend.
LHP Bobby Lucas will start game one against the Explorers' RHP Kevin Fuqua at Frank DeVincent Field in Philadelphia, PA.
Lucas enters tomorrow's game ranked second in the Atlantic 10 with 60 strikeouts and his strikeouts per nine innings (12.66) rank fourth in Division I through nine starts. He also sits third in the A-10 with 19 victims going down looking.
