ARLINGTON, VA- The George Washington and Marist College baseball teams combined for 26 runs, 36 hits and 11 errors on Friday afternoon at Barcroft Park, but it was the Colonials coming out on the wrong end of a 17-9 decision.
Junior Brett Bowers led GW (6-11) with a 4-for-5 effort from the plate including one homerun and three RBI while freshman Owen Beightol laced three doubles on the afternoon.
Poor defense opened the door to nine Colonials errors, their highest number of errors in a game since committing six against Central Connecticut in March of last season.
Marist jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first but GW was able to get one back in the bottom half after Beightol's RBI double.
Marist would then score in each inning until being held to a zero in the final frame. The Red Foxes used the defensive lapses and two-out hits to score two in the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth, four in the sixth and two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Colonials were a combined 17-of-43 (.395) at the plate and received RBIs from Stephen Oswald, Brendon Kelliher, Brookes Townsend, Tyler McCarthy and Jordan Berry.
The Colonials will attempt to snap their three-game losing streak in game two of this three game set. Senior Joe Richardson will take the ball for the Colonials against Marist's Chad Gallagher, game time is 1:00 pm.
