NEW ORLEANS, LA- The George Washington baseball team held a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning but were unable to hold on to the advantage as they fell to Tulane on Sunday afternoon at Turchin Stadium.
GW (2-5) gave starter Bobby Lucas a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning after Tyler McCarthy led off with a double down the left field line. He would later score on a throwing error by Tulane.
Tulane responded in the bottom half of the frame as Jeremy Schaffer would tie the game with a sacrifice fly. The RBI by Schaffer would be the only blemish on Lucas' afternoon, as he gave up just one run in five and one-third innings of work while striking out five batters.
The Colonials would retake the lead in the top of the fifth inning on freshman Owen Beightol's two-run double. Ollie Mittag was 3-for-4 for GW while McCarthy finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
GW would take the 3-1 lead into the eighth inning but the bullpen was unable to secure the victory. A total of four Tulane players were hit by a pitch and the Green Wave would score three runs to take a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning.
The Colonials will open their 2011 home schedule on Wednesday afternoon against district rival Georgetown at 2:30pm at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA. GW was 1-3 against the Hoyas last season but lead the all-time series 89-33-1.
