NEW YORK - The George Washington men's tennis team took an early lead over No. 47 Columbia on Sunday, at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center, but eventually the Colonials fell 5-2. GW falls to 2-4 on the season.
Ugur Atalay and Erik Hannah, at No. 1 doubles, as well as Alexander van Gils and Christopher Kushma, at No. 2 doubles, both won 8-6 to secure the early 1-0 lead over Columbia.
"We had our chances to make it close but with poor performances at our top 2 spots, the momentum was quickly lost," said head coach Greg Munoz. "At this level we cant just play hard and expect to win. We have to practice harder."
Columbia evened the score 1-1, when Tizian Bucher stopped Ulrik Thomsen's winning streak at three, winning 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
Kushma, at No. 3, and van Gils, at No. 4 singles, got close to forcing a third set but both fell in straight sets.
Hannah was the only Colonial to win in singles on Sunday, defeating Rajeev Deb-Sen, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 6 spot.
Up next on the Colonials schedule is co-preseason Atlantic 10 favorite Xavier, on Sat. Feb 19, at 1:00 p.m., in Pittsburg. The next day, Sunday, Feb. 20, GW will take on Duquesne, at 2:00 p.m.
