CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - On the third day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Tournament, freshman Francisco Dias boasted back-to-back singles and doubles victories to lead the George Washington men's tennis team at Virginia's Smith Tennis Center Sunday.
Dias qualified for the singles quarterfinal round with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Maryland's David Nguyen. He will face the No. 1 seed of Jarmere Jenkins of Virginia, who is ranked No. 18 by the ITA, on Monday.
The doubles duo of Dias and senior Ugur Atalay came away with a 9-8 victory over Georgetown's Andrew Bruhn and Charlie Caris. The tandem went on to defeat the Maryland pair of Tommy Laine and Jesse Kiuru by an 8-6 score and advance to the semifinal round on Monday.
"Ugur and Francisco worked hard and defeated solid Georgetown and Maryland teams," head coach Greg Munoz said. "They handled pressure perfectly and deserve to be in the semifinal."
Sophomore Ulrik Thomsen and junior Alexander van Gils fell short to Andy Magee and Vlad Stefan of Maryland, 9-8.
The Colonials return to action at 10 a.m. on Monday, beginning with the singles quarterfinal round.
