Men's Tennis Wraps Up Play at Harvard Winter Classic

BOSTON, MA- The GW men's tennis team powered through fatigue and injury in the final day of the Harvard Winter Classic at Harvards' Murr Center Tennis Courts on Sunday.
GW duo Alexander van Gils and Christopher Kushma, as part of the top doubles flight, battled against Alexei Chijoff-Evans and Davis Mangham, pulling out the tiebreaker to win 9-8 over the Regional doubles winner as a freshman. The Colonials other doubles pair, Richard Blumenfeld and Viktor Svensson, fought their way into a tiebreaker as well, but fell 9-8.
In singles play, Van Gils took on Harvard's No. 3 singles player Aba OModele-Lucien, defeating him in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, to improve to 2-0 on the day.
"It was great to see Alex bounce back from injury to win his singles and doubles matches after losing four matches in the last two days," said head coach Greg Munoz.
Svensson outlasted his Harvard opponent, winning a first set tiebreaker before the Crimson's No. 4 singles player retired due to injury. Kushma fell to Jonathan Pearlman, 7-6, 6-3.
"It was a great showing for GW against nationally-ranked Harvard," said Munoz. "Especially without our top doubles team of Ugur Atalay and Erik Hannah. I feel we have a solid chance against Maryland next weekend, though I feel they may be our toughest opponent of the year."
The Colonials travel next weekend to take on the nationally ranked (No. 75) Maryland Terrapins on Saturday, Jan. 29, with matches starting at 4:00 p.m. at UMD's Tennis Center at College Park, MD.
