KINGSTON, RI - With their hopes of a berth in the A-10 conference tournament on the line the George Washington University got an important win against the Rhode Island Rams 10-7, to even the series at a game apiece going into the series finale. Junior Joe Richardson came into the game in the first inning in relief of freshman Brian Derner and threw 8 1/3 innings and allowed just two earned runs.
Richardson did not allow a hit until the seventh inning and didn't allow runs until the Rams were able to score two in the eighth to cut the lead to the final score of 10-7. The win lifted Richardson to 7-4 on the season and was his second straight win in relief.
The Colonials offense was led by Tom Zebroski, who hit two more home runs and went 3-5 on the day with three RBIs. The senior also scored three runs of his own and also reached base on a walk. Junior Brendon Kelliher also hit a three-run home run in the game and drove in four. The home run was Kelliher's 15th on the season and Zebroski's were his 16th and 17th on the year. Redshirt senior Chris Luick also went 4-5 on the day and scored a pair of runs on the afternoon.
The Colonials scored three runs in the first inning, but immediately lost control of the lead when the Rams scored five runs in their half of the first. George Washington cut the lead to one in the second with a run and tied the game in the sixth with another single run. The Colonials took control in the next two innings as they scored a run in the seventh and four runs in the eighth. Rhode Island scored two in their half of the eighth, but it wasn't enough to overcome their deficit. The Colonials now find themselves in a four-way fourth place tie with identical 14-12 conference records.
The Colonials will now look to win the series against Rhode Island when the teams play in the series finale on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. George Washington will send junior Eric Cantrell to the mound where he will be in search of his ninth win of the season.
