Colonials Struggle in Rhode Island Opener

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University baseball traveled to Kingston, RI for a rare Thursday conference game, but struggled with the bats in a 7-0 series opening loss. It now drops the Colonials conference record to 13-12 on the season. It also dropped their overall record to 24-26 on the season and lifted the Rams to 16-9 in conference play.
Senior Ryan Lapointe pitched strong for most of the day, but ran into trouble in the seventh inning when he gave up five runs as the Rams extended their lead from 2-0 to 7-0. The Somersworth, NH native ended throwing his third complete game of the season but fell to 6-6 on the season.
The Colonials threatened in the ninth inning, but left the bases loaded but couldn't push across any runs in the defeat. The Colonials were only able to get hits from seniors Tom Zebroski, Chris Luick and Jon Chirumbolo.
The Colonials now find themselves in a sixth place tie with St. Joseph's after LaSalle and Fordham were able to pick up victories. Dayton and Saint Louis also sit at 12-12 in conference and have yet to finish their contests today.
The Colonials will now look to even the series as the same two teams play a Friday afternoon game with a start time of 1:00 p.m. EST. The Colonials will send junior Eric Cantrell to the mound as he is in search of his ninth win of the season.
