Baseball's 19 Hit Barrage Leads to Sixth Straight Win

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University baseball team pounded out 19 hits on Sunday at Harley Field to win a third straight game against the USC Upstate Spartans 12-6. Senior Curtis Eward had a big game, going 4-5 with two runs driven in. Senior Tom Zebroski also recorded four hits, driving in two runs and scoring two more.
Senior Ryan Lapointe pitched six innings, allowing one earned run to earn his second straight win. Sophomore Marshal Seedorff earned his first save of the season by throwing 1 1/3 shutout innings to close out the game.
The Colonials scored single runs in the first and second innings before opening the game in fifth inning by scoring four runs and extending their lead to 6-0. Two more runs in the sixth inning pushed the lead to 8-0. The Spartans responded with two runs in their half of the sixth inning, but the Colonials quickly countered with three more of their own in the seventh inning to push the lead to 11-2.
Senior Chris Holland continued his stellar season by reaching base five more times Sunday to push his team-high batting average to .469. Freshman Tyler McCarthy also had a two-RBI double and drew two walks of his own. The lone home run of the contest was hit by redshirt senior Chris Luick, his second of the season.
The Colonials now will return home for a busy week of games beginning with a Tuesday afternoon contest against UMBC. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. George Washington will also take on Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday at Barcroft Park, with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 as well. The team will wrap up the week with a three-game weekend series against Cleveland State.
