Cantrell's Eight Innings Paces Fourth Straight Win

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University baseball team returned to the road Friday afternoon and downed the USC Upstate Spartans 5-1 at Harley Park in Spartanburg, SC. Junior Eric Cantrell didn't allow an earned run in eight innings and struck out nine on the day to earn his second win of the season. Senior Chris Holland led the offense with three hits and drove in two runs to raise his team-high average to .462 on the season.
The Spartans jumped on the board first in the first inning when Jimmy Tanner delivered an RBI single to give USC Upstate an early lead. It was the only runs on the day for the Spartans.
The Colonials tied the score in the third inning when senior Tom Zebroski singled up the middle to lead off the frame and later stole second base. Two outs later, Holland delivered his first run scoring hit of the day when he singled to center field for his first RBI. This tied the score at one apiece, which was a score that held until the seventh inning.
In the seventh inning the Colonials scored four runs aided by a couple of Spartan miscues to give themselves their first lead of the game. The key hit was a two-RBI double by redshirt senior Chris Luick and a third run scored on the play when USC Upstate first baseman Trey Richardson committed a throwing error to push the Colonial lead to 4-1. A fourth run was scored on Holland's second RBI single of the game and sent the game to the eighth inning holding a 5-1 lead.
The Spartans made one final rally in the eighth inning, but Tanner struck out with the bases loaded to end their final threat. Junior Blake Green led the Spartans going 2-3 with a run scored.
The Colonials will return to the action at Harley Field against the same Spartans on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and George Washington is scheduled to send junior Joe Richardson to the mound.
