NEW YORK -- GW doubles duo of Erik Hannah and Ugur Atalay upset the No. 57 doubles pair of Jonathon Wong and Mihai Nichifor, 8-3, to open the match against No. 58 Columbia Sunday at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
The Lions' Nathaniel Gery and Haig Schneiderman tied it at 1-1 in doubles as they won the No. 2 position, 9-7, over Chris Kushma and Arya Vayghan. Columbia won the doubles point at the No. 3 position with an 8-3 win.
"We could have had a let down for losing back-to-back matches 7-0," said head coach Greg Munoz, "but our boys knew that this tough schedule would make us stronger."
Junior Yan Levinski found his game and secured GW lone point of the weekend at No. 1 singles. Levinksi defeated Wong in the third set tiebreaker, 11-9.
The Colonials were unable to secure another match against the Lions in singles play.
"We battled hard after dropping that doubles point, but Columbia is ranked for a reason," said Munoz. "We played at a higher level thank all of last year and we come home with a strong outlook moving forward."
GW next hosts Radford at the Montclair Country Club on Saturday March 6 at 1:00 p.m.
