Men's Tennis Sweeps Doubles over UMBC at Navy Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, MD - GW men's tennis had five flight champions after three days of competition at the Navy Gold Invitational, at the USNA Tennis Courts, after facing UMBC in day three. The Colonials had one doubles pair perfect in weekend action, as well as two singles players.
Christopher Kushma and Alexander van Gils were victorious against UMBC's Joe Adewumi and Mwali Phiri, 8-3, to win the No. 1 doubles flight at 3-0. GW freshman duo at No. 2 doubles, Viktor Svensson and Ulrik Thomsen defeated Gaulthier Berret and Adam Duprat, 8-6, for the tournament flight victory at 2-1 during the weekend.
Van Gils was also named No. 1 singles flight champion when he battled back to defeat UMBC's Duprat in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7). UMBC defeated GW in No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles in tough three set matches that went to super-tiebreakers.
Senior Yan Levinski won his No. 5 singles flight match over Shane Yap, 6-2, 6-2, and claimed the flight title.
Sophomore Ken Mkrtchian fell in his No. 7 singles match to Chris Kenney, a member of Navy's squad playing for UMBC, 6-1, 6-4, but was also able to wrap up the flight title at 2-1 during weekend action.
The Colonials have a brief break before their next tournament, the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championship, in Charlottesville, VA, on Oct. 20-24, to wrap up the fall season.
