JMU Rolls Past GW Baseball, 20-5

HARRISONBURG, VA - James Madison baseball recorded 20 hits and scored in eight of nine innings as they cruised past George Washington, 20-5, late Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Long Field/Mauck Stadium in Harrisonburg, VA. JMU improved to 10-3 on the season overall while GW dropped to 6-6, the first time this season they have been .500.
Jason Kuhn (1-0) picked up the win for the Diamond Dukes. He pitched 4.2 innings of hitless relief and recorded three strikeouts. James Weiner earned the save after he pitched the final three innings and allowed just one run. Justin Dingelli (0-1) suffered the loss. The redshirt sophomore allowed seven runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work.
GW started strong when lead-off batter Sean Rockey hit the second pitch of the game over the fence in right-center. For the SS, who transferred from Columbia Basin Community College during the offseason, it was his first home run since joining the Colonials. Five of the next seven GW batters reached base, without recording a hit. Charlie Kruer, Curtis Eward and Andrew Abokhair drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Another base-on-balls, issued to Doug Eizen, forced in the second run of the game, and then when Chris Marsicano was hit-by-the-pitch, another run was pushed across, making it 3-0 in favor of GW.
The Colonials added a run in the top of the second on a Curtis Eward sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Tom Zebroski, to give the visitors the 4-1 lead after 1 ½ innings of play. That would be the last run GW wou
d score until the top of the eighth, as JMU tallied 16 unanswered runs.
The Dukes plated six in the third inning, as nine batters safely reached base, on six singles and three walks. JMU added a run in the fourth, three more in the fifth, one in the sixth, another four in the seventh and three more in the bottom of the eighth. The bottom of the ninth was the only inning the Dukes did not score a run. JMU smashed four home runs in the game, including a pair of two-run homers in the seventh.
GW scored their final run of the game in the top of the eighth when Charlie Kruer led-off with a double to left-center and then came around to touch home on an Andrew Abokhair ground-out. Kruer and Sean Rockey both had two hits on the day. Tom Zebroski was the only other Colonial to record a hit.
JMU was led by Matt Browning, who went 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBI, and McKinnon Langston, who finished 4-for-6 with a homer and five RBI. Brett Sellers, who went 3-for-4, added a HR, two RBI and two runs. Dadvid Herbek also had three hits and three RBI.
The loss dropped GW's all-time record against JMU to 15-34.
George Washington travels to Lehigh this weekend for a three-game, non-conference series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 15, at 12:00 p.m.
