Men's Tennis Performs Strong At Northeast Regionals

NEW HAVEN, CT - George Washington's men's tennis team certainly gained respect this week with a strong showing at the Northeast Regionals. Freshman Ugur Atalay defeated the #17 seed Nate Nelms from Navy before falling to #1 seed and eventual champion Chris Clayton from Harvard 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
It was an exciting match as the freshman took on the region's best player. The match certainly brought notice that GW men's tennis which should make them a serious threat in the upcoming years. Full of freshmen and sophomores, GW Tennis hopes to make a big impact this spring. If you can succeed as freshmen and sophomores, rankings will certainly follow into their junior and senior year.
Atalay and Ryan Schlachter fell 8-6 to the #2 seeds from Columbia in the second round of doubles. Erik Hannah and Yan Levinski both won first round matches before falling to seeded players in the next round.
Last year Levinski started his freshman year 11-0 before his first loss. He looks to continue that strong stretch as he heads into 2009. "He is working hard and I am convinced he will find his game by January 17th when GW takes on Old Dominion" said Head Coach Greg Munoz.
