WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University men's tennis team defeated James Madison, 5-2, in their 2008 home debut Friday afternoon at the Regency Sport & Health Club in McLean, VA. The win improved George Washington's record in dual matches in the 2007-08 season to 3-3.
The match did not begin as planned, as the Dukes took the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. The lone Colonials' win came from the No. 2 doubles position, where Erik Hannah and Yan Levinksi teamed-up to earn the thrilling 9-8 victory over JMU's Brian Rubenstein and Carlin Campbell.
In singles play, the Colonials dominated, winning five of the six matches, four of them in just two sets. The wins came from No. 1 player Mustafa Gencsoy, Yan Levinski, who is now 3-0 since joining the team this spring, Sam Salyer, Erik Hannah and Elliott Daniels.
"Elliott Daniels and Erik Hannah really stepped up their singles play for the team," said head coach Greg Munoz, in his second season with the Colonials. "Depth is going to play a huge role in our success this season."
George Washington will continue their home schedule on Friday, Feb. 1, when they host Howard at the Regency Sport & Health Club in McLean, VA, at 1:00 p.m.
