GW Finishes 3rd at A-10 Men's Tennis Championship

MONROEVILLE, PA - George Washington (8-11, 5-4 A-10), the third seed, finished their season in exciting fashion, downing #4 St. Bonaventure, 4-3, in the third-place match of the Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship early Saturday morning.
The deciding flight was No. 3 Brandon Harris' victory. The senior, playing in his final collegiate match, clinched the win with a third set tiebreaker, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6.
GW freshman Maxx Wattenberg kept the Colonials alive by defeating his opponent, 7-6, in the third set of his match from the No. 6 slot.
The Colonials captured the doubles point, getting wins from the No. 1 team of Sam Salyer and Elliott Daniels and the No. 3 duo, Brandon Harris and Mark Doumba. Both pairs won their matches by a final of 8-6. Doumba also won his singles match, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
"It was an emotional win, and a great close to an up and down season," said first year head coach Greg Munoz. After starting the conference season 0-3, the Colonials won 5 of their last 6 A-10 matches.
In the Championship match, #1 Charlotte snuck past #2 Xavier, 4-3. The 49ers, who are in their second year competing in the A-10, earn the Atlantic 10 Conference's automatic bid into the 2007 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship.
Rounding out the bracket, Dayton finished the A-10 Championship in sixth-place followed by Saint Louis, Saint Joseph's and Richmond in the top nine. Temple and Rhode Island tied for tenth-place while La Salle and Fordham shared twelfth-place.
