GW Baseball Cruises Past Towson

ARLINGTON, VA - George Washington (10-18, 2-4 A-10) jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and never looked back, as they defeated Towson (11-18, 5-7 CAA) by a final of 9-3 Tuesday afternoon at Barcroft Park.
For GW, the win is their second in a row and comes less than a week after they lost at Towson, 19-2.
In today's contest, Towson got on the scoreboard early, plating a run in the top of the first on a run-scoring single into right field by Ryan Schreiter before GW starting pitcher Ryan Lapointe (Somersworth, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) buckled down and struck out the final two batters, with the bases loaded.
GW answered in their half of the first, plating four runs to take the early lead. The Colonials loaded the bases on three consecutive walks, setting the table for last week's Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge). The junior outfielder continued his torrid hitting, smashing a two-run double into right-center. A balk by Towson's Corey Cascio sent Kruer to third and allowed Michael Parker (Newton, MA/Newton South) to score. An Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) sacrifice fly to left field plated Kruer and gave GW the 4-1 lead after one inning of play.
In the second inning, GW took advantage of two more walks and a hit batter to load the bases yet again for Kruer. The centerfielder reached when the shortstop booted a groundball, allowing Andrew Haberern (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus/Trinity College) to score from third, making it 5-1 in favor of the Colonials and chasing Cascio from the game.
The Buff and Blue added another run in their half of the third. Abokhair reached on a single and then scored all the way from first on a high-looping double by Andrew Haberern, making it 6-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Colonials extended their lead to 8-1. Curtis Eward (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton) drove in the first run with a single to right field. Abokhair followed with his second RBI of the game, as his groundout to short allowed Charlie Kruer to score.
GW tallied their final two runs of the game in the eighth. Michael Parker singled through the right side to plate Haberern and Bryan Hwang (Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley-Old Tappan) later scored on a wild pitch.
After a shaky first, GW starter Ryan Lapointe (2-1) settled down and allowed just two runs in six winnings of work, while striking out six batters. Cascio (0-1) took the loss for Towson.
George Washington continues A-10 play later this week, hosting St. Bonaventure in a three game series at Barcroft Park. The opener is on Thursday, at 4:00 p.m. Game two is set for Friday at 4:00 p.m., and the series will conclude at 3:00 p.m., on Saturday.
Game Notes: Michael Parker was 1-for-1 with four walks and scored two runs ... Charlie Kruer finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs ... Andrew Haberern recorded his first multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3, with one RBI and two runs.
