WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's tennis team will begin play in its fall season this weekend as the Colonials will participate in both the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Virginia Beach and the University of Virginia Fall Invitational in Charlottesville.
They will be one of the 22 teams competing in the 2006 UVA Fall Invitational. The Colonials will be sending six players to participate in the event, which is scheduled to run from Friday to Sunday, September 15-17, with play beginning at 9 a.m. each day.
The GW six will be lead by a pair of juniors, Mustafa Gencsoy and Sam Salyer. Following the 2005-06 season, Gencsoy was selected as an A-10 All-Conference player, while Salyer was one of only seven athletes in the league to earn academic all-conference honors. Last year, Gencsoy posted an 8-6 dual-match record at the No. 1 position during the spring, including a 4-1 record against conference opponents and a 3-1 mark at the A-10 Championship. Salyer, playing at the No. 2 slot, posted a 3-1 record.
Junior Elliot Daniels is the only other returning player to be making the trip to Charlottesville. The three newcomers participating this weekend are senior Brandon Harris and freshmen Ryan Hunter and Maxx Wattenberg.
The UVA tournament will be playing host to 21 players from the Preseason ITA Singles Rankings, including 10 who competed in last year's NCAA Singles Championship.
