Baseball Gives One Away At William and Mary, 15-12

WILLIAMSBURG, VA - George Washington University (4-11) committed seven errors that lead to nine unearned runs in a wild 15-12 loss to William and Mary (6-12) Wednesday afternoon in a 3:40 game at Plumeri Park.
The Colonials scored three times without recording an out in the top of the first inning but the Tribe answered right back in the bottom half with six unearned runs to take a 6-3 lead.
William and Mary then added one run in the second inning, five in the sixth and three more in the seventh to hold a 15-4 advantage.
Catcher Whitey Wallace (Syracuse, NY / Phillip Exeter Academy) connected for his first career home run when he launched a three-run shot in the eighth inning. Overall, Wallace went 3-for-3 with four RBI.
Freshman Matt Boyd (Rockville, MD / Calvert Hall) come on as a defensive replacement and notched three RBI with a three-run ninth inning triple.
GW starter RHP Brian Frazier (0-3) threw 62 pitches in a 1.2 innings and was touched for seven runs, one earned, three walks and two hits before being lifted due to an injury.
Tribe starter RHP Paul Knackstedt (1-0) allowed four earned runs, five hits and struck out four in 5.0 innings to earn the win.
Although William and Mary scored 15 runs, just one player, first baseman Jeff Lunardi, recorded two hits.
Centerfielder Matt Owens (Fayetteville, GA / Fayetteville County) also homered for GW, leading off the third inning with his second home run of the year.
Third baseman Greg Sexton homered in the game for William and Mary (3).
Trailing 15-7 heading into the ninth inning, the Colonials rallied to score five runs but came up short to drop their fifth straight game.
GW returns to action this weekend in the Coca-Cola Classic hosted by Winthrop.
The Colonials will join Michigan, Wagner and the Eagles in the tournament.
GW's first game is Friday at 4:30 PM. LHP Dan Pfau (1-2, 5.40 ERA).
