Men's Tennis' Mustafa Gencsoy Shines at DC Metro Championships

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University sophomore Mustafa Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey) won the Flight A singles bracket to highlight play for the Colonials at the 2005 DC Metropolitan Tennis Championships this past weekend, Sept. 23-25, presented by Georgetown University. Gencsoy also teamed with classmate Sam Salyer (Minneapolis, MN) to reach the semifinals of the main draw in doubles play, while Salyer captured the consolation singles title in Flight A.
Gencsoy, seeded second in the top flight to open the tournament, topped Temple's Milan Juricka in the final in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to capture the title. After a first round bye, Gencsoy toppled each opponent he faced in straight sets en route to the championship. Salyer, meanwhile, was ousted by Juricka in the second round after a hard-fought, three-set match (4-6, 6-1, 11-9), but bounced back in the consolation bracket to record four straight wins, including a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Georgetown's Ted Tywang in the consolation final.
In Flight B singles action, freshmen Michael Campagna (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) and Mark Lansman (Penn Valley, PA) met in the consolation final with Campagna prevailing in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Senior Will Timmons (Greenville, SC) advanced to the quarterfinals in Flight B, but fell to Howard's Faron Carter, 6-3, 6-4. Timmons defeated Rich Moran of Georgetown, 6-7(0), 7-5, 10-5, in the opening round, before knocking off American's Chris Armes, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5, to make it to the quarters.
On the doubles side, Gencsoy and Salyer, seeded No. 1, breezed into the final where they met second-seeded Kenneth Brown and Faron Carter of Howard. Brown and Carter came out victorious in the match-up, winning 8-4, to earn the title. The duo of junior Daniel Balke (Portage, MI) and Campagna made it all the way to the semifinals, but also fell 8-4 to Brown and Carter.
The Colonials are back in action when they travel to Georgetown on Friday, Oct. 7, to take on the Hoyas in dual-match play at 2 p.m.
