Colonials Lose to Bonnies, Beat Cleveland State
WASHINGTON, DC (April 8) ­ George Washington men's tennis went 1-1 on the weekend in Olean, NY losing to conference rival St. Bonaventure, 2-5 on Friday, April 6 and sweeping Cleveland St. 7-0 on April 7.
The Colonials struggled against the Bonnies losing the doubles point 2-1, with their sole win coming from the partners of freshman Matt Hane and junior Kinzie Wright who topped SBU's Mark Gorski and Joel Carney 8-4.
Hane would also take one of the two singles matches won by the Colonials, beating the Bonnies' #1 singles player Vili Nurmi, 6-2, 6-3. Entering the match, Nurmi had won Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week honors for two straight weeks. GW's other singles win came from freshman Brett Warner who defeated SBU's Drew Crawford in the sixth spot 3-6, 7-5 (10-2).
In Saturday's action, GW would cruise to a sweep of Cleveland State, 7-0. The Colonials easily handled the Vikings, losing only five total games in singles play. Hane and Steve Cady notched an 8-4 victory over Cleveland's Franco Gallo and James Cooney to complete Hane's weekend of undefeated play.
The Colonials (9-11) will travel to Pittsburgh for the Atlantic 10 Championship from April 12-15 at Duquesne University.
