Washington, D.C. (April 25, 2001) - Junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) hit a home run in the top of the 11th inning to put GW ahead 4-3 and senior Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Alban?s) had an RBI single in the eighth, to break the all-time record of 171, to lead the Colonials to an extra inning victory over the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers this afternoon at Alumni Field in Baltimore. GW improved to 28-16 on the season while UMBC fell to 21-15-2.
The Colonials jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by senior Nick Iovacchini (Asheville, NC/ Asheville) and a solo home run by sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park) .
The Retrievers got a run in the fourth and one in the seventh off of GW starter Glen Skutnik (Lorton, VA/ Hayfield) to tie the score at two. Skutnik, who had lost his previous three starts, pitched well despite not factoring in the decision. He pitched seven solid innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four.
GW regained the lead in record breaking fashion in the eighth. Iovacchini drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a ground out by Dokoupil. Two batters later Rouhier singled to left to knock in the 172nd run of his GW career and give the Colonials a 3-2 lead.
The Retrievers battled back in the bottom of the eighth, scoring a run off of reliever Chris Worth (North Arlington, NJ/ N. Arlington) to tie the game at 3.
The score remained that way until the 11th. After Rouhier lined out to center field, Bassett homered to right to put the Colonials up 4-3. Bassett?s home run was the 38th of his Colonial career, moving him into a tie for second on the all-time list with Allen Browning (?93). A few batters later senior Ross Smirne (Fleetville, PA/ Lackawanna Trail) came through with a clutch base hit to plate two and put the Colonials up 6-3.
Senior Bryan Beggs (Somerset, PA/ Somerset) pitched the final two innings to earn the victory and complete a memorable day for GW.
