Men's Tennis Finishes Fourth In Atlantic 10 Tournament

St. Bonaventure captured the 2001 Verizon Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis championship title with its 4-2 victory over Massachusetts. It is the Bonnies first A-10 title, which earns them an automatic berth into the NCAA men's tennis championship.
In the championship match, St. Bonaventure captured the doubles point winning No. 2 (Joel Carney / Mark Gorski) and No. 3 (Markus Arvaja / Drew Crawford) 8-6 and 8-4 respectively. In No. 2 singles, Mikko Haulos (SBU) def. Brent Davis 6-2, 6-4. St. Bonaventure won No. 3 singles as Joel Carney defeated Will Shaw 6-2, 6-3 while Arvaja won No. 5 singles for the Bonnies, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Rory Theis for the 4-2 win.
The final day began with #3 Xavier facing #4 George Washington for third place in an intense match that went down to the wire at No. 1 singles for the deciding point and 4-3 victory. Xavier's Danny Sturdevan bounced back from a 5-7 loss to Matt Hane and took the second set 6-4 and the deciding match 6-4. Rob Bakker won No. 2 singles over GW's Kevin Wright 6-2, 1-6, 6-0 and the Colonials won No. 3 singles with Kinzie Wright defeating Aaron Bauer 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. Xavier captured No. 4 and No. 6 singles as Ryan Potts defeated Nick Vikstrom 6-3, 6-4 and Cameron Bell took the decision over Brett Warner 6-3, 2-6, 4-1 as Warner retired in the third set. The Colonials won No. 5 singles with Mike Melen defeating Scott Triplett 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. George Washington won No. 1 (Kevin Wright / Drew Zamansky) and No. 2 doubles (Hane / Kinzie Wright) 8-3, 8-4 respectively.
Host Duquesne took a 4-0 victory over Rhode Island to finish fifth overall. The Dukes took doubles as David Brady and Paul Tran took an 8-1 win over Bill Moran and Kevin Colozzi at No. 1 doubles, while Jason Mayer and Oran Stephen defeated URI's Dave Gustein and Karl Antons 8-6 at the No. 2 slot. Brady won No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-1 over Moran and Mayer defeated Phil Johnson 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Paul Tran's 6-2, 6-2 win over Mike Jacobs at No. 5 singles gave the Dukes the decision.
The All-Championship Team will be voted upon by the coaches and released later this week.
