Washington, D.C. (Feb. 23) - Charlotte starting pitcher John Maine scattered nine hits and allowed one run over eight innings to lead the University of Charlotte 49ers to a 7-1 win over the Colonials Feb. 23 in the first game of a three-game series.
The Colonials fell behind 2-0 in the first inning when Charlotte first baseman Brad Erwin hit a two-run home run off of Colonials starter Ron Christie (Lincroft, NJ/ Middletown South).
GW cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning. Junior Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/ Parkland) was hit by a pitch with two outs and junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) followed with a double off the centerfield wall to account for GWs only run. Bassett has started the season by going 7-18 with a home run and five RBIs in GWs first five games.
Charlotte added another run in the fourth to make it 3-1, but then blew the game open with a four run fifth inning. The outburst was fueled by a pair of doubles to start the inning by Nick Blackmon and George Sandel.
The Colonials will look to even up the series on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
