Baseball Takes Two From St. Joseph's

NORRISTOWN, PA - Early inning eruptions were the downfall as the St. Joseph's University baseball team (11-20, 3-2 A-10) was swept in a doubleheader by George Washington (24-13, 6-2) April 8. The Colonials won the first game 12-8 and were victorious in the second 19-3. SJU starting pitchers managed to toss just 1.2 innings in the two games combined.
In the opener, G.W. Scored 9 times in the first two innings and then held off a late St. Joseph's rally to win 12-8. The Hawks scored in every inning, but the sixth and out hit the visitors 13-11, but were unable to muster a win. Kevin Kirkby (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and Mike DeVincentis (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) powered the Hawk attack with three hits each. Kirkby extended his hitting streak in the contest to 17 games. On the hill, Doug Sieger (Avondale, PA/Kennett) pitched 5.2 innings in relief of Scott Fremont (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner), who suffered the loss.
G.W. received home runs from Mike Bassett and Dan Rouhier. Adam Belicic, who played on the Croatian National Team which was coached by SJU assistant coach Ken Krsolovic in the summer of 1998, collected the victory.
In game two, the Colonials chased Hawk starter Ryan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) after just 0.1 inning and rolled to a 19-3 win. Four of SJU's 7 hits in the game went for extra bases as, both DeVincentis and Jim Reilly (Pittsburgh, PA/Seton-La Salle) homered for the Cityliners. Additionally, Eric Wyatt (Frederick, MD/Thomas Johnson) and Rob Reed (Conshohocken, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) triples for SJU.
Greg Condon (5-0) recorded the win for G.W, Woods suffered the loss for SJU, he is 1-1. The Colonials scored five runs in the first, third and fifth inning. Tony Dokoupil had three hits, Matt Walker, Mike Bassett and Jake Wald homered for G.W.
SJU will this weekend's three-game Atlantic 10 series with George Washington on Sunday with a single game starting at 12 noon. All of the action can be heard on 1590 AM, WPWA.
