No. 19 Water Polo Sweeps MAWPC Foes at Home

WASHINGTON – No. 19 GW water polo opened MAWPC play this weekend with a 3-0 record at home. The Revolutionaries defeated (RV) Bucknell and Mercyhurst on Saturday at Long Bridge Park, before earning the win vs. Mount St. Mary's at the Smith Center on Sunday. GW improved to 7-8 overall as it started conference play at 3-0.Â
No. 19 GW 15, (RV) Bucknell 13
The Revolutionaries trailed for most of its MAWPC opener on Saturday against the Bison from Bucknell, but GW locked in late to overtake the Bison in the fourth quarter. GW was trailing at the end of the first, second and third quarters, but the Buff & Blue scored six times in the fourth quarter while holding Bucknell to just three goals to secure the 15-13 win. Antonio Florena paced GW with four goals, while Andrea Forno and Adonis Vlassis contributed three goals apiece.
No. 19 GW 18, Mercyhurst 10
The Revolutionaries stormed out of the gate against the Mercyhurst Lakers, taking an early 7-1 lead in the first quarter. Despite play leveling out from that point, GW's lead was comfortable throughout as it claimed its second conference win by a score of 18-10. First-year Andrea Forno led the efforts on offense with six goals and one assist. Yam Kabakov had the second-most points in the outing with two goals and three assists.
No. 19 GW 19, Mount St. Mary's 13
Opposite of its prior match, the Revolutionaries came out slow vs. the Mountaineers at the Smith Center, but GW picked itself up in the second quarter to command a 9-4 lead at the halfway point. GW kept Mount St. Mary's at arm's reach for the rest of the match, holding a minimum of a five-goal lead through the final 16 minutes. Vlassis and Florena had four goals apiece, while Vlassis added a match-high four assists. Forno had a pair of goals and drew lots of attention from the Mountaineers with five exclusions drawn.Â

GW hits the road next weekend for a pair of MAWPC rematches. The Revolutionaries travel to face Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa., on Saturday (2:00 p.m.), before making the trip to Erie, Pa., on Sunday to challenge Mercyhurst (10:00 a.m.).
