Water Polo Powers Past Mount St. Mary’s; Battles Navy for Championship Berth on Saturday

BRONX, N.Y. – No. 3 GW water polo stormed past No. 6 Mount St. Mary's on Friday night in the opening round of the MAWPC Championship. GW advances to the MAWPC Championship Semifinals, where it will face off against Navy at 4 p.m. tomorrow for a spot in the championship game.
GW stirred its first victory of the tournament after a second-quarter surge to take a 9-4 lead at halftime. Adonis Vlassis, Joseph McCreary and Andrea Forno each caught the hot hand, scoring two goals apiece in the second as GW rattled off seven straight goals to close the first half.
The Revolutionaries managed their lead well after halftime, clamping down in the third quarter, which only saw two goals in the period. GW could breathe easy in the fourth, holding its large lead all the way through the finish to complete the season sweep over Mount St. Mary's.
First-year Gabriele Molfino led GW with four goals in the opening round, while GW's All-Conference First Team representative, Vlassis, led the team in points with seven (three goals, four assists). Yam Kabakov also produced offensively for GW with five points (one goal and four assists). Vasilije Marinkovic held stout in net with 15 saves, while also adding one assist.
GW faces a Navy team that won its first-round matchup vs. No. 7 Mercyhurst, 20-6. The Buff & Blue dropped two tight games vs. the Midshipmen in the regular season, 12-9 and 14-11. Tomorrow's match will be streamed on cwpatv.com.
