BRONX, N.Y. – No. 3 GW water polo defeated No. 2 Navy, 11-10, on Saturday evening to clinch a spot in the MAPWC Championship final. GW will make its first conference championship final appearance since 2019, and the Revolutionaries will do so tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. against No. 1 Fordham. Sunday's MAWPC Championship final will be streamed on CWPATV.com.
The Buff & Blue seemed to have the edge early vs. Navy, but the game was destined to be tight. GW closed the first quarter up 4-3 before widening the margin to 7-4 at halftime. GW's lead vanished when the Midshipmen had their way to start the second half with a 4-0 run, tying the match early in the fourth quarter.
The lead swung back as GW grabbed a 9-8 edge early in the fourth, but Navy rattled off consecutive goals to go back on top at 10-9 with under six minutes to play. Then with just under two minutes remaining in regulation and the score still at 10-9, GW got the goals they needed – the first by Adonis Vlassis and second by Joseph McCreary – to tie the game and take the lead back for good.
Vlassis (three goals, two assists) and Yam Kabakov (one goal, four assists) tied with a team-high five points. Vlassis also led the team with three steals. Andrea Forno drew a team-high three exclusions to go along with his three-point game (two goals, one assist). In goal, Vasilije Marinkovic had eight saves.
GW now meets Fordham, the top-ranked team in the conference and fifth-ranked team in the country, tomorrow for a battle with the MAWPC Championship on the line. Fordham received a first-round bye in the MAWPC Championship, before defeating Wagner in today's first semifinal, 17-9. GW is 0-2 against Fordham this season, dropping a tight game in the Bronx on Oct. 11, 16-14, before falling at home on Nov. 2, 25-14.
