No. 20 (T) Water Polo Escapes Mount St. Mary’s in OT, Beaten by (RV) Navy

EMMITSBURG, Md. – No. 20 (T) GW water polo completed the season sweep against Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, escaping The Mount with a 17-15 overtime victory. That came a day after GW was defeated on the road at (RV) Navy, 12-9. GW is now 13-13 overall with a 6-3 mark in the MAWPC.
No. 20 (T) GW 9, (RV) Navy 12
GW and Navy battled for the first time this season, and it was the home side that escaped with a narrow win. GW was down 4-2 after a defensively-led first half, and the Revolutionaries quickly tied the match at 4-4, but the Midshipmen rattled off three straight goals to build a lead and led the rest of the match on their way to the 12-9 win. Adonis Vlassis and Austin Nelson paced GW with three goals apiece.
No. 20 (T) GW 17, Mount St. Mary's 15 (OT)
An extra period was required to decide a winner between GW and Mount St. Mary's, and it was the visiting Revolutionaries that clutched up in OT to secure a 17-15 win. The matchup was tight most of the way – GW took its largest lead of the night at 10-7 in the third quarter, but The Mount roared back in the fourth to send the match to overtime at 14-14. The first overtime period ended at 15 apiece, but GW got on the board early in the second extra period and held off Mount St. Mary's to the end. Vlassis led the charge again with five goals in the victory, supported by Antonio Florena with four goals.

GW closes the regular season with three games at home in the coming weeks. Next Sunday, Nov. 2, GW hosts Wagner (11:00 a.m.) and Fordham (3:30 p.m.) at The St. James in Springfield, Va., before GW goes back up against Navy in the regular-season finale on Friday, Nov. 7, on Senior Day at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Va.
