ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The George Washington baseball team couldn't hang on to a late 4-2 advantage, falling in the season finale to Saint Louis, 6-4. The Buff & Blue finish with a 27-27 overall record and a 14-16 mark in the Atlantic 10.
Following the Billikens' pregame senior ceremony, both starting pitchers brought their A-game, keeping the offenses off the scoreboard through the first three and a half innings. First-year Jonas Aponick earned his seventh start of the season and third in A-10 play, striking out two batters. SLU finally got traffic on the bases in the fourth, prompting GW to make a move to the bullpen. The Billikens managed to push across the game's first run, charging Aponick with just one earned run in his eighth appearance this season.
Immediately following Saint Louis' run, the Revolutionaries posted two of their own in the top of the fifth. First-year Charlie Walsh ripped a single into center field, scoring two runners to claim GW's first lead of the day.
Saint Louis knotted the game at two apiece in the home half of the inning, scoring a run from third base on a sacrifice fly to right field. With both teams trading blows, it was GW's turn to answer back, and the GW Revs did just that, putting up two runs in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Charlie Rogan recaptured the advantage with an RBI groundout to second base, while Sam Gates doubled the lead by scoring on a wild pitch.
The final three innings were dominated by the home team as Saint Louis put up two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to put the game away. GW got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but were unable to capitalize, ending the 2025 season with a 6-4 loss.
GW finishes in a three-way tie for seventh place with Dayton and Richmond, with all three teams holding a 14-16 A-10 record. Dayton holds the tiebreaker and will receive the final spot in the A-10 Championship, going a combined 4-2 against GW and the Spiders this season. The Revolutionaries finished 3-3 in those games, while Richmond went 2-4.
Sam Gates finishes his third collegiate season just one hit shy of 200. He's also three doubles away from entering the top five in program history for a career and one walk from 100 in his tenure. Ellis Schwartz finishes his GW career with 144 hits, coming up just six shy of 150 in only two seasons.
