A decorated two-sport athlete in Foggy Bottom, Mike Holloran '66, was a prime example of dedication, a commitment to excellence and representing the Buff & Blue with dignity and pride.
"The GW Baseball family mourns the passing of Mike Holloran," said Head Coach Gregg Ritchie. "Not only was Mike a special player on the diamond, he was also a standout student-athlete for GW's football program as well. As a DC native, Mike truly knew what it meant to represent the Buff & Blue. I offer my deepest condolences to Mike's family, friends and loved ones."
A graduate of Gonzaga High School, Holloran arrived on campus in 1962 as a Psychology major. Competing in both baseball and football, Holloran's four years on campus were highlighted by many individual accolades both on the field and in the classroom. With the Buff & Blue baseball team, Holloran finished with a .368 batting average in his senior season, tops for GW and ranking fourth in the Southern Conference in 1966. He was twice named to the All-Southern Conference Baseball team in 1965 and 1966, while also excelling in the classroom, being named to the Southern Conference Academic Team as well in '65.
On the gridiron, Holloran was a standout tailback for GW, earning the Tuffy Leemans Trophy as the school's outstanding senior football player in 1965. During that same year, Holloran rushed for 720 yards and 11 touchdowns, earning a selection to the All-Southern Conference backfield and receiving Honorable Mention All-American honors from the Associated Press. He was also tabbed the Outstanding Collegiate Football Player by the Washington Touchdown Club, given to the top collegiate player in the DMV area at the time.
After finishing his degree in Psychology in 1966, Holloran remained at GW to earn a Law Degree. He graduated from GW's Law School in 1969 and later moved to Colorado in 1970 to start his own law practice. Holloran's practice spanned over 50 years in the Steamboat, Colo., community, where he helped innumerable people in the community throughout his career.
Culminating his athletic achievements, Holloran was inducted into GW's Athletics Hall of Fame in 1987, becoming just the 10th baseball player to receive the honor and one of 30 football players in GW's history to receive the distinct honor.
Mike Holloran passed away in late March. His time in Foggy Bottom was highlighted not only by the incredible things he was able to accomplish on the baseball and football fields but also by laying the groundwork for a career of helping others for over 50 years. Holloran's legacy will live on not only through GW's record books but through the lives he touched as well.
