WASHINGTON - George Washington men's basketball sprinted out of the gates Wednesday vs. VCU and held a double-digit lead just nine minutes in, but knowing a run was coming from the second-place team in the league, the GW Revs couldn't quite hold on when the Rams caught fire in the second half and ultimately fell, 80-72.
GW led 36-35 at the break after shooting 48% in the first while holding the guests below 42%. VCU found its stride in the latter 20 minutes of the game, hitting at a .636 clip, including 58.3% from behind the arc (7-12) after intermission.
Sophomore Trey Autry was scorching for the home side, knocking down a game-high five triples of his own en route to his career-high 23 points, with 18 coming after intermission. Rafael Castro joined his teammate in the 20-point column, efficiently doing so on just eight shots from the floor. The big man powered his way to 6-of-8 field goal makes, while also knocking down 8-of-12 at the line and showing his all-around game with game-high tying numbers in assists (four) and steals (three).
Ultimately, VCU's experience and shot-making allowed the Rams to pull away after it was a two-point game with less than 12 minutes to go. The Buff and Blue would get the score to within four with just over 2:00 to play, but the game was put away at the line where the visitors shot .875 on the night (14-of-16).
A critical road date looms at Davidson next, with GW taking on the Wildcats in North Carolina at 4 p.m. Saturday.
