Castro Hits 1,000 in Senior Night Win
3/4/2026 10:27:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - On Senior Night at GW when the Foggy Bottom faithful bid farewell to Rafael Castro, Tyrone Marshall Jr., Tre Dinkins, Trey Moss and Mohamed Binzagr, a back-and-forth basketball game ensued that took 45 minutes for the decisive blow to be dealt. What seemed certain at moments, only allowed Smith Center to exhale at the close of overtime and the scoreboard showing a 91-82 George Washington victory.
Both teams enjoyed a 10-0 spurt in a first half that saw three ties and five lead changes, and the one-point edge GW held at intermission, 36-35, remained that way as the clock ticked under 3:00 in the second and the Revolutionaries clinging to a 66-65 advantage. That's when Castro stepped to the free throw line and coolly canned a pair of freebies, putting him over the 1,000 point mark in his prolific career.
The final three minutes of regulation played out in an eerily similar script that George Washington has written this year, with a shot to win it at the waning seconds though it wasn't to be, and an extra session was needed to decide it.
The Revolutionaries left no doubt in the bonus session, scoring 18 points in the extra five minutes to escape with the nine-point win.
While Castro got the headline, it was Jean Aranguren who had the ball and the game in his hands when it was needed most. In a 20-point effort, with 16 coming after halftime, it was Aranguren's steady hand and steely demeanor that settled down an excited bunch when exuberance was abundant.
Six players hit double figures for GW, including Marshall (16), Trey Autry (15), Castro (13), and Dinkins and Christian Jones both with 11.
The regular season concludes Saturday in Chicago with a matchup with Loyola, live on USA at 2 p.m. ET. The bracket for next week's A-10 Championship tournament in Pittsburgh will be released Saturday night, with George Washington starring down a Thursday, March 12 second round date.
