CHICAGO - George Washington men's basketball struggled offensively on Saturday afternoon at Loyola Chicago, falling to the Ramblers, 68-62, to close out the regular season.
The Ramblers employed a new-look zone defense that flummoxed the Revolutionaries, holding GW to 33.3% from the floor, its second-lowest mark of the season. GW's typically reliable two-point offense was just 14-of-36 on the day and the Buff & Blue were held to 9-of-33 from deep.
GW started out well, leading 15-6 ten minutes in, but Loyola found its rhythm by making 20 of its next 29 shots to stake itself to an 11-point lead on numerous occasions in the second half. GW got within two with three minutes to play on a layup by Rafael Castro, but had a layup blocked on the next possession and didn't score again until there was 30 seconds left, cementing the defeat.
Garrett Johnson led GW with 17 points on 5-of-14 shooting and was joined in double figures by Castro and Christian Jones, who scored 14 points each.
Next up for GW is the Atlantic 10 Championship contested in Pittsburgh. GW will be the No. 9 seed and open play on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. against No. 8 seed Fordham. The game will be broadcast on USA Network.
