The Charles E. Smith Center was bursting at the seams Friday night for the Monumental Matchup when Georgetown made the two-mile trip to Foggy Bottom to face a raucous, capacity crowd on Alumni & Family Weekend at George Washington.Â
The meeting had the appearance of a heavyweight fight, with the Revolutionaries playing with an emphasis on physicality against the visiting Big East foe.Â
In their Smith Center debuts, Omari Witherspoon (team-high 16 points), Lovro Urbiha (15 points, team-high eight rebounds), Dylan James (14 points, 7-of-9 FG) and true freshman Promis N'Landu (14 points) showed the promise of a team that's expected to compete at the top of the Atlantic 10.Â
A 38-38 halftime score yielded to a 63-50 Hoyas' edge midway through the second before James, Urbiha and N'Landu nearly blew the roof off the venerable building at 22nd and G. James and N'Landu sandwiched transition buckets around two of Urbiha's game-high tying four threes, to cut the 13-point lead to three at 63-60.Â
Georgetown recovered, and George Washington couldn't get back to within a possession the rest of the way, but the physical play and electric atmosphere in the gym left both sides wanting more.Â
Playing back home after starring at St. John's College High School, Witherspoon showed the benefit of the offseason work he put in after transferring from Pitt. The Bowie, MD native canned 4-of-5 three-pointers, after seeing his high school band play the national anthem.Â
Up next for GW is Opening Night on November 2nd in a doubleheader with the women's team. Women's basketball hosts UDC at 5:00 p.m. before the men's team sees Navy at 7:30, both on ESPN+.
