DAVIDSON, N.C. - GW men's basketball built a 16-point, first-half lead on Saturday at Davidson and then fended off every Wildcat charge in the second half to pull out a critical 74-67 triumph, vaulting the Revolutionaries ahead of the Wildcats in the A-10 standings. The victory marked GW's 17th of the season, securing the program's first winning campaign in eight years.
GW efficiently picked apart Davidson to start the game, building a 29-13 advantage with five minutes to go in the first half. However, the Buff & Blue didn't make a shot the rest of the half and saw Davidson close on a 14-3 burst, accented by a pair of late 3-pointers to cut the lead to 32-27 at intermission.
The Wildcats continued to claw back after halftime, tying the game on four separate occasions in the second half. But on every single ensuing possession, the Revolutionaries answered to go right back on top, never letting Davidson take the lead.
The last tie came on a Bobby Durkin 3-pointer with 4:46 left, but Rafael Castro was fouled on GW's next trip up the floor and he connected on a pair of free throws to put GW back up two. Christian Jones then came up with an elite block on a Durkin triple try and Castro scored on a putback to build a two-possession cushion.
GW then came up clutch at the line, making eight of its final 10 at the stripe to salt away the win (19-of-26 overall on the day).
Castro continued his First Team All-Conference caliber campaign with 20 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, also connecting on 6-of-7 from the floor and 8-of-10 at the line. Jones drilled a pair of 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 12 points and four assists. Gerald Drumgoole Jr. (3-8 3s) and Jacoi Hutchinson (7-7 FT) chipped in 11 points each.
GW's defense held Davidson without a field goal for over seven minutes in the first half to build the double-digit lead and frustrated the A-10's leading scorer, Reed Bailey, who did finish with 16 points, but was 4-of-13 from the floor and turned the ball over five times. The Wildcats, who commit the eighth-fewest turnovers in the country, turned it over 14 times on Saturday, leading to 15 GW points.
With the win, GW Revs set their eyes on a pair of crucial home games in the coming week as they wind down A-10 play. First up is a visit from Saint Joseph's on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. before UMass comes to town on Saturday at 6 p.m. Both games will air on Monumental Sports Network.
